|Where is your head and heart these days?|
|It’s been a hell of a year and most everyone I’ve talked with over the last several months – me included — feels like they’re experiencing a wide range of emotions, sometimes even within a single day. It’s to be expected with the perfect storm of events that has swept the world and especially the U.S. of late.|
So what can you do to stay on top of your game and not get caught up in the weeds? Here’s my go-to strategy:
First of all, if I’m having an off day, I admit it to myself. I don’t try to fight it. Yes, that’s right. I admit that I’m not in a bloom mode by any stretch of the imagination.
But the next step is really important. What do I do next? I talk to myself. Yes, I do. I tell myself I can stay in a shitty mood or I can choose to step out of it.
Choosing to feel good over bad –sounds like an easy choice. Hello?! It can be easier said than done though. But when I commit to the choice, then needing to change my actions is the next step.
I have my go-to action steps that help me move back into my own power. My blooming place. Here are a few;
-I do something physical like take a walk or find a Youtube exercise video or just do some good stretching. Moving the body is a great way to get out of the head.
-I start a project that I’ve been putting off (like this email). I tell myself I only have to spend 10 minutes on it. Usually though, before I know it, 20 minutes has past and I’m feeling like I’ve made some headway. And that feels good!
-I decide to be gentle to myself. The other day I wasn’t in the mood for anything so I just started watching the new Netflix series “Emily in Paris”. Total utter escapism, but it helped me change the negative chatter going on in my mind.
-I focus on what is good — I make myself name 5 things I am grateful for in that moment. Almost like going down on the floor for 10 pushups, I go to my mind and do 5 gratitude “pushups”.
-I call a friend and ask how they’re doing. A surefire way to get out of my mood is to ask someone else how they’re doing.
Remember, the only thing that we do have control over in this crazy world is our own attitude. It can be really difficult to get out of a funk, but if you make a conscious effort, it can be done. You can choose to bloom if you’re willing.
FInally, I must admit that I do have days where moving into action just isn’t in me. A good night’s sleep is then my next move. And 9/10 times, the light of a new day signals a fresh start.
Do you have any other ways that work for you? I’d love to hear them. Drop me an email or dm me on Facebook or Linkedin. I’m always looking for new inspiration!
And in the meantime, remember every moment of every day you get to make a choice on how you’re going to show up. That’s pretty empowering if you ask me….
