I used to whisper this saying to myself every night:
“Star light, star bright,
First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have this wish I wish tonight”
If you have or haven’t wished upon a star, what have you wished for in your life or your career?
I worked for my years in agencies big and small and during those years, I had many wishes such as:
How do I deal with a not great client?
How do I balance work and life better?
How can I make my work more meaningful?
How can I help my team more?
Am I inspiring my people?
And the list goes on and on.
During those times, I also wished I had someone objective that I could talk with and ask for counsel. I wanted someone who would listen to me and help me clarify my own thoughts, someone who would act as a good sounding board and someone who would not judge me for my thinking and my occasional doubts.
I ultimately figured out what I wanted was a mentor – a person I respected and knew the business I was in but who wasn’t my boss. I didn’t feel comfortable being “vulnerable” in front of the person I reported to on a day to day basis.
Have you ever felt this way?
I talked with enough people over the years and realized I was not alone in wishing I had someone who could be an objective sounding board.
I started bloom mentoring with the vision of being that person for others. After 30+ years in the advertising business, I know the business from the inside out. I have mentored many people over the years both when I was still in the agency business and now via bloom.
Having a mentor is not a sign of weakness, but rather of strength. It means you are willing to learn more about yourself as a person and as a professional. Mentoring is a business strategy that works.
There are two kinds of people: Those who have reasons and those who have results. What kind of person are you?
If you want to learn more about having a mentor, send me a message through my contact form. I would love to hear from you.
